St Francis Adult Education Centre
St Francis has been a night school for
adults for thirty years. Over that time some 70000 adult learners
have been able to access low cost education and skills training
programmes.
St Francis grew out of the deep desire of Indigenous African
people for education. It was founded in the 70’s during
the apartheid regime. The parish church was the first classroom
and educators entered the Langa Township illegally to teach.
St Francis is currently a Day, Night and Weekend School, servicing
about 4000 learners annually and having well over 100 educators.
It generally operates from 08:00 to 21:00 daily. Academic course
levels range from Literacy Level 1 to Matriculation (Grade
12). Post Matric courses include Technology Educator Training.
Skills training programmes include Computer Literacy, Sewing
Skills, Fashion Design, a Music School and a Motor Learner
Licence School. Fees are generally equivalent too less than
10 Euro a year per learner. The intention is that this holistic
education will provide learners with opportunities in which
they can develop into fully participative members of society.
In return, St Francis staff are motivated and rewarded by the
commitment of learners, who work all day and still come to
learn at night, as well as the generosity of spirit of the
educators, who teach after hours in the dangerous township.

History of the
Centre |
 |
A Brief History
In 1967 the government closed all night schools in
Cape Town. In 1971 Wilson Mangaliso and his friend
approached Sister Veronica O'Nolan (at that time
the Principal of Loreto Convent in Seapoint) to help
them with their Matriculation Geography, because
they had no educator. She agreed and so began the
night school.
